Curriculum

Here at Charnock Hall, we teach children the English National Curriculum as published by the UK Government. We deliver all subjects via half-termly topics to enhance and engage pupil learning and to make it as relevant, fun and exciting as possible. We teach KS1 phonics using Letters and Sounds. 

We hold year group meetings, at the beginning of each academic year, so that teachers can explain to parents how they intend to deliver the coming year’s content and answer any questions you may have. If you have not been able to attend one of these meetings, or require any further information, please contact your child’s teacher and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

CURRICULUM STATEMENT

Our curriculum will provide fun and exciting opportunities that will stimulate pupils’ imagination. This will include opportunities for problem solving, developing self-esteem and exploring and developing their own interests. By encouraging collaborative learning, we will ensure that pupils are both self-motivated, and challenged by others.

Our curriculum will allow pupils the freedom to take risks, to know that failure is a part of their learning journey, and that their mistakes can be utilised to achieve success. Pupils will be given the skills to be independent learners who can reflect on their learning, and be able to improve upon it. Our curriculum will teach pupils to do this by using the skills of critical thinking and using tools of analysis and reasoning.

Through an engaging curriculum with hooks into learning, linked with pupils own interests, pupils will not be ‘spoon-fed’, but will instead take ownership of their learning. They will care about their learning and will be proud of every achievement.

The world we live in is ever changing and our curriculum will allow pupils to grow to be adaptable, with transferable skills that will equip them to thrive.  Through our curriculum, pupils develop their appreciation of Charnock Values, and the values of others.

APPROACH TO THE CURRICULUM

BRITISH VALUES @ CHPA

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

How does CHPA develop children’s understanding of British values?

We uphold the British value of Democracy by:

  • facilitating a democratic process for electing Pupil Councillors and the running of the council.
  • taking turns in class, at dinner time and in extra-curricular clubs.

We uphold the British value of the Rule of Law by:

  • teaching children an understanding of human rights.
  • implementing our Charnock All-Star values which have clear and agreed statements, and ensuring that pupils know their own right and respect the rights of others.
  • teaching pupils to learn about the process of law-making and the part that citizens can play in that process.
  • implementing our procedures and protocols for dealing with any behavioural or bullying issues.

We uphold the British value of individual liberty and work to identify and combat discrimination by:

  • teaching an understanding of the concept of freedom and choice.
  • teaching our RE curriculum, which inculcates values of understanding, tolerance and respect for others, including those of other faiths.
  • holding discussions in RE, English and other subjects, which allow pupils to develop respect for the opinions, values and beliefs of others.

We uphold the British value of developing personal and social responsibility by:

  • expecting to havepupils responsibility in many ways at CHPA, including being Play Leaders, Peer Mediators, Pupil Councillors and Eco-Warriors.
  • expecting pupils to take responsibility in every class for a variety of roles which assist in the running of the classroom.
  • encouraging pupils to have responsibility for their own possessions, behaviour and work, both at CHPA and at home and to always do their personal best in all aspects of CHPA life.
  • training staff to deliver information about keeping safe on the internet to all our pupils and holding information sessions for parents about this.

We uphold the British value of respect for British Institutions by:

  • celebrating many British festivals and special events, e.g. Remembrance Day, Bonfire Night, Christmas, Easter, World Book Day, Children in Need, Red-Nose day etc.
  • regularly inviting representatives from various groups, such as Police, charities and the local church to visit CHPA and talk to pupils in both lessons and assemblies.
